From Re-Lilly

..."
This is the longest blog I have written and before I wrap it up with the giveaway I have to share one last thing that has kept me busy recently. One of my girlfriends recently started a new job and wanting to make a good impression she was determined to win the company's Ugly Sweater Contest. After much searching in thrift shops and online she was about to give up so I offered to make her a sweater. We came up with a theme, The Grinch, and decided to make it as obnoxious as possible so she would get noticed.

We met at the craft store and picked out all the supplies. I took everything home and stayed up all night. My wonderful husband drove the sweater to her in the morning so I could get some sleep. I made a sweater that jingles and lights up and must be the most obnoxious sweater because she won 1st Place! I am so happy for her! She left her holiday party winning some great prizes like an Apple iPad and several gift certificates to her favorite local stores.
A light bulb went off and I thought since I put so much effort into the sweater I should see if there are contests online that I could enter. After a few hours searching I found a contest and entered! I am embarrassing myself in the photo below hoping to win an iPad for my Dear Husband! I think he deserves one after giving me a trip to meet Lilly, putting up with our pink Christmas trees, my Lilly addiction and he went out the day after Christmas and bought four sets of pink Christmas lights for me so next year I can decorate our big tree in pink & green! Isn't he wonderful! If you think so please take a few quick seconds to use the links below the photo to vote for my Ugly Sweater Contest Entry!

Christmas snow 2010

This year was an extra special Christmas...we got snow!  It was bitter sweet in that my mom was not with us but some how I imagine she sent us this snow.  She would always call her grand children to see if it was snowing at each house.  Then she would call through out the day to check on their progress of the snowmen or what they were playing.  Even though the kids are grown she never let them grow up to her.  She passed away very unexpectedly but she is still in our hearts.  This snow-woman is for  you mom.

I imagined her calling all day as were out by the fire getting warm.  That is a new addition that she did not get to see and would love!  We have got much use out of our fire pit and patio...

So as we enjoy the winter blast of 2010, I like to think my mom sent us this. Thanks mom! We love you...

A few idea for Christmas???

Starting my Christmas list and shopping...Wow what a list already! I would like to have my shopping done by Thanksgiving. In the past it would be done. My mom and I would go out and shop.  But this past year I lost her. Now I am just not in the mood. She was a great shopper and knew how to get that deal. She would shop from  morning until the stores closed. New York did not know what hit it.  She loved her grand children and bought out the stores for them.  Each grand child had their own special time...this year she will be missed.  I love you mom!

I have done online shopping and it is very easy. That may be my way out this year.  I love Lilly Pulitzer and have quite a few stores that I order from.  Just place an order from Pink Sorbet this weekend. They were very helpful. Check them out on facebook:

pink sorbet

Of course who does not LOVE Hermes!!!

Check our the Hermes LilkyPop handbag

Well if I order for my family from Pink sorbet and if I am lucky enough to get my Hermes handbag...what a Christmas it would be. NOT   All I want is my mom back. My family is thinking of skipping Christmas but we know mom would have a fit. So mom this is all for you. Bargains and all!  I LOVE YOU.

Smile Makers~New Items

Products School Counselors can utilize from Smilemakers!

Posted by Danielle Monday, September 6, 2010 8:31 AM I recently discovered Smilemakers, a company owned by Staples. Smilemakers slogan is "Stickers, toys, and prizes from Smilemakers help you make kids smile!" Smilemakers has some great products school counselors can utilize. Below,  I outline the products I purchased and how I plan to use them. I also give suggestions of other products from Smilemakers school counselors may find useful.

Conversation Cubes
I purchased conversation cubes from Smilemakers to use in my group counseling sessions. I like to do an ice breaker before each session to help students get to know each other and feel comfortable. The conversation cubes are great for this because students can roll the cube and answer the question. The conversation cubes are a big time saver for me! Before I purchased the conversation cubes,  I used a paper box template to for my icebreaker questions. The paper box served its purpose, but I found I needed to keep making them over and over again because they got dirty, ripped, or crinkled from wear.  The conversation cubes are made out of a soft foam material. They have a similar consistency to a stress ball so they are very durable. There are 6 conversation cubes in the set with a total of 36 questions. Some of the questions on the conversation cubes include: "What do you want to be when you are older?, What do you like to do in cold weather, and What is the strangest dream you have had?"

Inflatable Dice
I have been searching far and wide for large dice. The inflatable dice I purchased from Smilemakers are exactly what I was looking for. I sometimes use dice in groups for icebreaker questions to mix things up a bit. I come up with a numbered list of questions and write them on chart paper. Students roll the die and they have to answer the question that corresponds to the number on the die. Some students have trouble seeing the regular sized die because it is small. Others want to know what number the student picked but can't see across the table. The size of the inflatable die allows everyone to see.  Sometimes dice falls on the floor when students are rolling them and it takes awhile for students to find it. Because of the size of the inflatable dice, students will have no trouble finding them if they get dropped on the floor.

The conversation cubes and inflatable dice from Smilemakers are perfect supplements for use with Seeing Red: An Anger Management and Peacemaking Curriculum for Kids, a curriculum I use for anger management and conflict resolution groups. Seeing Red has great icebreakers at the beginning of each session that could be utilized for almost any type of counseling group.

Community Helpers Visors
I plan to facilitate many career related activities this school year. I was looking for career materials to use for bulletin boards and other activities. Smilemakers has a 2 pack of 12 different cardboard Community Helpers Visors. I used the visors to display on a bulletin board I titled "Career Construction Zone." A fan of School Counselor Blog on facebook, Barb, suggested to make the bulletin board a guessing game and have students win a prize if they can correctly name all of the careers. She also suggested using newspaper want ads as a background, which I thought was a really cool and cheap idea.

***Unfortunately during the writing of this blog post, Smilemakers is no longer carrying this product.*** Other places where you could find career hats include: a craft store such as Michael's, a dollar store, Target, or Walmart. If you have other suggestions, please comment below, post on School Counselor Blog Facebook page or email me.

Other Items from Smilemakers School Counselors Could Utilize
Besides pencils, toys, and other giveaways, Smilemakers has a few other cool products school counselors could utilize.

My Counselor Sticker Rolls
Smilemakers has rolls of stickers for counselors to give to students. I thought these stickers would be cool to hand out during National School Counseling Week in February or other events promoting the school counseling program, such as open house or meet the teacher night. My Counselor Sticker Rolls include 5 different sticker styles including: "My Counselor Cares About Me!, My Counselor Thinks I'm Great!, My Counselor Thinks I'm Super!, My Counselor Says I'm Terrific!, and My Counselor Says I'm Special!"

Community Helpers Fun to Know Puzzles
The Community Helpers Fun to Know Puzzle is a game where children match the occupation to the tools or equipment they use. The Community Helpers Fun to Know Puzzle is recommended for PreK-1. If the students you work with do not have exposure to many different careers this product could be used in older grades as well. The Community Helpers Fun to Know Puzzle could be used for bulletin boards and as a guessing game for students much like the suggestion for the career bulletin board I created with the Community Helpers Visors.

Smilemakers runs different specials all the time. Sometimes they have free shipping on all orders! Sometimes they even send customers 10% off coupons too! I received the items I ordered in about three days!

Comment below, email me, or visit the School Counselor Blog Facebook Page to share your favorite products from Smilemakers or other companies!

Giveaway-Baby Clothes Custom Keepsake Bear!!

Baby Clothes Bear-made with your little ones clothes!
"Recently, I found a little shop on etsy that has some really good finds. The items in this shop include precious keepsakes, the kind that you will want to keep forever because they are custom made. The name of the shop is Shellylisser (Click here to visit). Michelle is the talented woman behind the shop.  Michelle started sewing when she was only five years old! Her mother had her working with a real sewing machine at that age and Michelle has been sewing ever since. Michelle is a mother of two and a teacher so she's busy, but thankfully she's made the time to run her etsy shop. She makes quilts (there's a Lilly quilt in her shop), stuffed animals, jewelry and purses, all with a custom touch because she incorporates photos or fabric that comes from the items you provide."

Dog Days of Summer: Piedrastudio Giveaway

It's time for another Dog Days of Summer Giveaway! And while it's cooled down around DC a LOT, my mom assures me that's a miserable, steamy 108 in eastern NC yesterday! So what better way to beat the heat than to enter to win GORGEOUS earrings! *Or for those of you experiencing Lilly-online-sale anxiety or frustration, here's the cure!

On the quest for the perfect birthday gift for my best-friend (it's in October, but she's crazy picky so I tend to shop early) I found Piedrastudio on Etsy and fell in love! Some artisans make a few good pieces, but that's NOT the case in Piedrastudio where every single piece is to die for! Seriously, check it out and you'll see what I mean.

Talia, the designer is one gifted lady! Not only do I love her craftsmanship, but she lived in DC from high school to marriage, and we all know how I feel about my city. When she agreed to participate in this giveaway I was ecstatic!

Heck even her bio on Etsy is great. I LOVE finding out what inspires people to do things and that there are other women out there who look to jewelry to help stand out in conservative work places. I mean, being a fashionably memorable southern Republican lady can be tough work!
"As a child I would watch my grandmother dress for special occasions, completing every outfit with jewelry she had collected from around the world. As a teenager, her cast-offs became my treasures, and as a young professional in conservative offices, funky pieces distinguished me from the other women in dark suits.

Years later, my mother and I would spend hours going through her jewelry box as she’d lovingly tell me the story behind each piece. I started making jewelry after she died – it became my creative and therapeutic outlet.
Today my passion for jewelry is fueled by a sense of history and memory, combined with a love of color, texture and design. My creations are the products of my ongoing quest for vintage and new materials that I bring together in unexpected ways – gold vermeil from India with pressed glass from Czechoslovakia, vintage filigree with Swarovski crystals, Lucite with gemstones…
While I design to complement today’s trends, it’s my hope that you will still be reaching for your piedra jewelry for years to come."

Here are just a few of my favorite pieces from the studio!

Tell me this wouldn't be perfect with nearly EVERY Lilly piece I own!

Pairing these with the necklace above... simply divine!

Talk about unique. These earrings are just so different from the standard stuff you see in stores or even online.

The colors are so rich and vibrant. Totally gorgeous.

What wouldn't this pendant go with? From a t-shirt and jeans to a suit walking the halls of Congress, this simple necklace sparkles in all the right ways!

And now on to the giveaway... to make things more interesting it's going to be two-tiered. Meaning there will to be TWO winners!

Tier One:

Cornflower/ Gold vermeil filigree earrings with chalcedony

To Enter to win these earrings you must do BOTH of the following:

1) Sign up to follow the DC GOP Girl blog
2) "Like Piedrastudio" on Facebook

Need new headbands for school?  A clutch for Rush? A birthday or holiday gift (hey, it's never to early to think about holiday shopping!) This is a great time to pick them up. You'll love Lotus and Lilly's handmade items. They are absolutely fabulous! I receive compliments every time I walk out of the house in one of my headbands!

Also, I wanted to mention a very cool thing you might not know about Lotus and Lilly's designs. Kristina has about 20 items in the Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History exhibit, in Boynton Beach, FL. The exhibit features: hair clips, bracelets, the Lilly fabric covered 9" wooden monogram letters (they requested an "L"), a box purse, clutches, headbands (of course) and a few other items. What an amazing honor for Lotus and Lilly! I feel special just knowing her!  Be sure to check out the exhibit if you're in the local area, or will be traveling that way.

Do you see how excited I am to feature Lotus and Lilly? I love everything on her website, but I'm really coveting this clutch in the vintage print "Familia de Gato". What do you think? I love all the lion prints, guess it's because I'm a LEO. :-)
